Monday

Hi all- I hope everyone had a good weekend. Ours was good but I tell you it was really hard to not be able to see our guy yesterday. We haven't even spent 24 complete hours with him yet but we are smitten. We spent a good portion of our day looking at photos of him on the laptop (not to rub in the fact that we get to look at photos and you don't). Carson asked in an email what the hardest part of our time here has been and I have to say that I think that all of us here would agree that it is handing him over at the end of visiting time. I always notice how quiet everyone is as we leave the baby house and I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that the kids are going down for a nap. In my mind, anyway, I am kind of going through everything that we did with him that day and what we'll do tomorrow when we see him. And we had to do the afternoon visitation today because the Michigan couple (Jen- from a town in between Flint and Detroit) had their court date this morning. It sure is nice to have people go before us and be able to give us the lowdown on how it works. So anyway, we had afternoon visitation and I don't know if you have checked out the weather here or not, but it is unbearably hot here. Especially when you are in a room without AC and you get yelled at for opening the windows. I guess that's what showers were invented for. But anyway, it didn't seem to bother our little one a bit. He was just as happy and active as always. His favorite thing is this big blue ball like a pilates ball that has bumps all over it. He loves for me to sit him on top of it and bounce and he just loves the texture of it. But today, I sat him up and held him while Peter rolled the ball to him and then I would catch it for him and he would kick it back. He got so excited waiting for Peter to roll it back that he would flap it his arms like he has getting ready to take off and make this excited "UhAhUhAhUhAh" sound. Soooooo cute. He does the same thing in front of the mirror when he sees himself. And he was super active today too. He can't crawl yet but his does this thing where he pushes himself off with his left foot and kind of launches himself forward. I keep thinking that he is going to nosedive and hurt himself, but he seems unfazed. And we did see him whine today when he got tired. I guess that means he's feeling comfortable enough with us that he feels that we'll listen to what he says and try to fix it. Oh, and I almost forgot, Peter kept putting him upside down and so got a gift of half digested beef and potato stew all over the front of him. Literally it was about a quarter cup of it. Or maybe it was horse and potato stew. I don't know. In any case, it was gross. Mer told me the other day that she got our little chickadee some PJ's and diapers which was super nice. I thought I should let the rest of you guys know too that we have updated info for him. He is now 7550grams (around 16pounds?) and 69cm (24inches?). The info we had before was from last month. We have some clothes for him that are 0-3 months and they fit as do 3-6. And we bought some 6-9 that are a little bit too big but he'll grow into them. Also, he has light skin like us so he looks better in the stronger colors rather than pastels (like the both of us). Anyway, I thought I'd just pass it along in case any one's interested :-) Have a great Monday! -m
p.s.- the blue stuff on his leg is because he is a bit under the weather. he's having bathroom issues and I guess they dripped the medicine on his ankle when there were putting it elsewhere. p.p.s.- if anyone has anything they want to know about K-stan just ask and we'll put it in a post!

I was hoping you'd get to keep him all the time while you wait after your court date but sounds like they have strict procedures. That would be really tough. Can you post photos of the baby house? Even just the outside? The city sounds cool with the river and all!Do you know what his typical daily schedule is like at the baby house? And you mentioned stew, I was wondering if he's on solids yet and what they have introduced to him there. He sounds very strong developmentally which is fantastic!

Happy late b'day Peter! We've been at the lake for a week, and thus incommunicado...no internet. What fun I have had catching up! I can't wait to squeeze that juicy little (big!) leg! I think you may have a basketball player here...We are all taking bets on the baby's first name and are wondering how you spell Peter in Russian...Petr? As soon as Lamar comes to the office, I am going to have him write a blog on what he knows about the Tatars...I am so enjoying the pictures of K'stan and Peter on the horse has got to be the funniest! Ann has made the baby's hand in Peter's hand her screen saver, but I might have to make Peter and the horse mine! Your friends sound wonderful, and how nice it will be to keep up with them because you and baby can look forward to some nice destination reunions! This experience will be over in another blink of an eye...keep savoring each day and again, thanks for letting us be a part of it! Miss you all! Much love, Geri

Awwww...just like Peter -- oohing and ahhing at himself in the mirror.

Isn't it the BEST feeling when you find something that makes the baby so happy? It's amazing to see things from a child's point of view...something simple like a big blue ball makes them so happy.

Good minds must think alike...we also picked up a pair of striped PJ's for him, size 9 mos. Sounds like they will work.

Be sure to let us know what you need -- Meredith and I can get the house stocked before you come home.

Happy b-day Peter -- as far as I'm concerned, you got the best gift ever!!!

Hugs and love to the three of you (and if it makes you feel better, it's unbearably hot here as well).

xo The Middletons

PS -- Also curious about what the baby house looks like, and your apartment!

Hey -- I have a question -- I know you can't share the specifics, but how much do you know about Baby L's history? Do you know why he was given for adoption, etc.? Is it common for adoptive parents to know birthdates? Just curious the extent of info you have on him (but know you can't share it yet). Thx!!

hey! LOVE reading your blog. You lil guy has a very cute hand, foot, and leg. :) It's so fun reading your posts. I feel like a blog stalker. He sounds like a strong lil guy, and you're having so much fun with him. It's hot in Florida, too, but we do have our very nice AC here. I am teaching vacation bible school today and kept staring when all the mom's with babies when came to pick up their kiddo's, and I always ask how old they are so I can figure out how big our BAby Kaz might be. :)

thanks for doing a great blog! :)

It's hard to believe 35 years have passed since your birth, Peter! What a wonderful present--a new son! We're all (1,000+ friends and relatives) are enjoying your wonderful accounting of the day's events! The history and geography lessons have been informative, too. Maren, you're wonderful!! Keep blogging--we're devouring every word and picture! Hugs to the three of you!xoxo

Hi M and P: loved the pictures and commentary. The Tatars, arriving aboug 1250, eventually thoroughly intermarried with the ndigenous Russian peoples, but you can sometimes see faint traces of their Mongolian origins (Lenin, for example, has some Tatar blood and his eyes were slightly eastern). The Tatars were a dominant force in southern Russia long enough to impart lots of their culture, notably their view of kingship as totally absolute and violence as a normative way of life (linguistically many Tatar words used even today in Russian have to do with harsh things: chains, punishment etc. In 1783 Catherine the Great finally booted the Tatars out of their last remaining possession in Russia, the Crimean peninsula. Moscow's rise to being the head of Russia was to a large measure due to her successful resistance to the Tatars and to leading the Russians to drive them out. End of history lesson! Love to all, Lamar

Hello Peter and Maren,
it sounds like you are having great time in KAz. I am very happy for you. Maren, you said that anybody can suggest topics for your posts, so here is a question for you from one of my families in process: do most people speak Kazak or Russian? Should I learn Russian or Kazak?
I assume they speak both since both languages are official but I imagine it will be more useful for them to learn Russian since our staff over there is Russian.
Thank you for your input.
